This too shall pass
Some days, life feels like too much. The news is scary. Work is endless. Relationships are messy. Social media makes everything feel urgent and permanent. But here’s the truth, it won’t last forever. Even the hardest moments fade. Even this shall pass.
Think about it. Every challenge, every heartbreak, every failure, it’s temporary. You might feel stuck, but nothing stays the same. Life keeps moving, whether we like it or not. That’s the power of this old saying, it reminds us to breathe and trust the flow.
And it works both ways. Not just for pain, but for happiness too. Got a promotion? A big win? A perfect weekend? Enjoy it. But remember, life moves on. Happiness doesn’t stay forever either. Even good times shall pass. That doesn’t make them less sweet—it makes them precious.
Take today’s world as an example. COVID-19 changed everything. Fear, isolation, uncertainty, it felt endless. But slowly, things got better. Communities adapted. Vaccines arrived. Life returned. It was hard, but it passed. Your personal struggles work the same way. Lost a job? Heartbreak? Failed an exam? Pain hurts now, but it won’t stay. Something new is always around the corner.
Even small moments matter. Missed the bus? Lost your wallet? Had an argument? Annoying, yes, but temporary. Life is full of tiny storms. Most of them pass faster than you expect. And that’s comforting. It reminds us to be patient and take a deep breath.
This saying also teaches humility. Social media makes it easy to feel like success lasts forever. Likes, followers, achievements, they feel permanent. But they aren’t. Life moves forward, trends change, and praise fades. Enjoy the win, but don’t cling to it. Gratitude in the moment is enough.
And let’s not forget resilience. Life throws curveballs constantly. But remembering that tough times are temporary gives you strength. A stressful project? A family problem? A health scare? It won’t last forever. Take one step at a time. Keep moving. Even this shall pass.
Mindfulness experts talk about this too. Thoughts, moods, emotions, they rise and fall like waves. You can’t stop them, but you can watch them pass. That’s exactly what this saying encourages, observe life without getting stuck in it. Pain and joy are both fleeting. Awareness makes them easier to handle.
Here’s the modern twist, life is faster than ever. News, notifications, trends, pressure, they make everything feel permanent. But nothing is. Remembering that life is temporary gives clarity. You don’t need to panic. You don’t need to hoard joy. You just need to live, moment by moment, knowing life keeps moving.
So, next time life overwhelms you, whisper these words to yourself, “Even this shall pass.” And next time life delights you, whisper them again. Neither pain nor pleasure lasts forever. Neither fear nor happiness stays. Life flows like a river. And you? You’re just floating along, learning to enjoy the ride.
“Even this shall pass.” Hold onto it. It’s simple. It’s true. And it’s exactly what we need right now.

I needed this reminder today - thank you
Beautiful post and reminder that change is a part of life. We are so IN our lives sometimes it consume us. But… just zoom out, we will realize it’s impermanent. This reminded me of a zen panda story I would read to my kids. It’s about a man where terrible things had happened to him but he always looked at it as neutral. People would be so devastated for his losses but he would say, maybe. Then all those things happened for a reason and those good things happened to eventually work out in his favor. People would praise how lucky he was. He would respond, maybe. 🤣 I loved reading those types of stories to my kids.
